Theatres without borders: a systematic review of the use of intraoperative telemedicine in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)

Objective This systematic review aims to provide a summary of the use real-time telementoring, telesurgical consultation and telesurgery in surgical procedures patients low/middle-income countries (LMICs). Design A was conducted accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses statement Cochrane Collaboration published guidelines. Data sources EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane, PubMed Google Scholar were searched original articles case reports that discussed or defined as low-income middle-income (as per World Banks’s 2021–2022 classifications) from inception August 2021. Eligibility criteria selecting studies All included if they reported telemedicine, on LMICs. Results There 12 which telementoring 55 LMICs variety specialities. one study 15 patient. Conclusion The presence intraoperative telemedicine represents principal move towards improving access specialist care resource-poor settings. Not only do several demonstrate it facilitates training educational opportunities, but remains relatively frugal efficient method doing so, through empowering local surgeons offering optimal while remaining their respective communities.
